Auto Glass FAQ'S
If my windshield is cracked, should I be concerned about replacing it?
There are several very important safety reasons why a cracked windshield should be replaced. Cracks may impair the driver's visibility, but they can also affect the overall integrity of the vehicle. The vehicle's structural integrity and design performance in the event of a crash depends on the strength of the windshield. Which option wins out when you compare the safety of your family versus the cost of a new windshield?
If my windshield has rock chip damage should it be repaired or replaced?
That depends on the size and location of the break. Some damage can be repaired with a good end result that permits the windshield to perform as originally designed. However, some breaks are difficult to repair and may eventually become cracks. The recommended practice is that a repair should never be performed in the acute area of a windshield. The acute area is located directly in front of the driver above the steering wheel.
What's the difference between windshield glass and other glass?
Auto glass is designed and manufactured for optimum safety in the event of a crash. Your windshield is made of laminated safety glass. The side and rear windows are made of tempered glass. Laminated safety glass is two pieces of glass with a layer of vinyl bonded between, so it will stay intact in a collision. Tempered glass has been treated to make it much stronger than other glass of the same thickness. If it breaks, it is designed to shatter into small pieces.
What is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) replacement windshield?
On a new car, every part comes from the original equipment manufacturer, including the windshield. Auto glass replacement companies have the option to select a replacement made by a company that manufactures OEM windshields (such as PPG, Pilkington-LOF, Guardian, Carlite, etc.) or glass made by non-OEM manufacturers ("aftermarket glass"). Both OEM and aftermarket glass must comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, but there are two important OEM benefits:
- An OEM replacement windshield is produced from original equipment style tooling. This type of windshield will have the appearance of your vehicle's original windshield and will fit properly, making noise, leakage and optical distortion problems much less likely.
- OEM glass manufacturers partner with automobile manufacturers to enhance overall functionality and improved performance. They have a greater knowledge of the engineering demands a car can place on the windshield and their replacement windshields are made using the same quality assurance systems as for new vehicles.
To help ensure the safety of your family and OEM integrity of your vehicle, demand an OEM replacement windshield.
How does a windshield perform in an accident?
When the windshield breaks, the glass must remain stuck to the vinyl inter-layer to minimize any cuts that would occur if an occupant were to come in contact with the windshield. The windshield must be able to stretch while absorbing the energy of the crash. This is why a soft flexible vinyl layer is sandwiched between the two pieces of glass. Finally, the windshield must remain attached to the vehicle opening to act as a backboard for the passenger side airbag and to keep the occupants in the vehicle during the entire accident. Windshields play a significant role and are very important for both frontal impact and rollover crashes.
How long will it take to repair or replace my windshield?
To repair a rock chip generally takes from 15 to 20 minutes. The time it takes for a windshield replacement depends on the make and model of your vehicle. For most vehicles one hour is sufficient. However, some are more difficult and take more time. The technician who takes your call should be able to give you a general estimate of time required.
Can you do the work at my home or office?
From a quality control point of view we prefer to perform auto glass installations in shop. Cold, rain and snow are definite deterrents to a quality installation. Additionally, wind, with the accompanying dust particles, introduces contaminants to the adhesive. Since our primary objective is to provide a quality and safe installation, we request that our customers come to us for this type of work. We realize that many of our competitors do provide mobile service, but we hope the extra quality and safety we provide is worth the little extra time and effort on your part. In some instances, if you just don't have the time, we may be able to provide pick-up and delivery service.
Does Hansen Glass work with my insurance company or agent?
Yes! We can assist you in making your claim and directly bill the insurance company, less your deductible if any. You will need to provide your policy number and the date and cause of the damage. Please refer to our Insurance Claims section for more details.
